Do I bring the whole application or just the confirmation page?

Just the confirmation page. The State Department says you are not required to bring your entire application, but you are required to bring the confirmation page with your application ID on it so the post can retrieve your DS-160, and you must have it with you during all phases of the application process — without it, they may not be able to process your visa case. I lost my confirmation page — can I print it again?

Yes. The confirmation page shows an X where the photo should be — what does that mean?

It means the photo upload failed. If the confirmation page includes a photo image, the upload was successful and no separate printed photo is required.

What do I still have to do after submitting the DS-160?

The State Department says electronically submitting the DS-160 is only the first step in the visa application process. Next: print and keep the barcode confirmation page; contact the embassy or consulate where you wish to apply to confirm whether you need to be interviewed and to schedule the interview (the post does not schedule it for you); and pay the visa application processing fee, following that post's country-specific instructions. If the post tells you an interview is required, the process is not complete until you appear for it.

I selected one post on the DS-160 but scheduled the interview at another — is that a problem?

The State Department says the embassy or consulate where you actually apply should be able to access your form using the barcode on your DS-160 confirmation page. Its own example is an applicant who selected the U.S. Embassy in City X on the form, then scheduled an interview at the U.S. Consulate in City Y using the barcode from the completed DS-160 — the consulate in City Y can accept it. You must bring the confirmation page to the interview.
